Anthropomorphic Conception of the Sun in Qohelet 1:5

Aron Pinker

Abstract

It is suggested that the difficult שואף in Qohelet 1:5 was derived from an original שת אף , in a densely written Hebrew paleo-script manuscript. The original וְזָרַח הַשֶּמֶש וּבָא הַשָּמֶש וְאֶל־מְקוֹמוֹ שָת אַף זוֹרֵ הוּאַ שָם , “and the sun rose, and the sun set, and at his place he stationed, he also rises, he is there,” describes in nonanthropomorphic
terms the sun’s repetitive appearance.
